Jake Paul was understandably upset after he felt like a deal was done for a massive showdown against Canelo Alvarez only to have the rug pulled out from under him just before announcing the fight.
The YouTuber turned boxer had contracts drawn up and a partnership with Netflix secured for what would have been undoubtedly his biggest and toughest fight yet.
But just before he expected to announce that he was facing Canelo, Paul instead had to hear that the multi-division champion inked a deal with Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season — the Saudi Arabia based promotion that’s been responsible for booking some of the biggest fights in boxing over the past few years.
Appearing on his brother Logan Paul’s YouTube channel, Jake was downtrodden to say the least after the gut punch he felt losing out on the Canelo fight.
“Pretty shitty,” Paul said when asked how he feels about the whole ordeal. “I feel really bad. We’re literally, we’re verbally agreed, Nakisa [Bidarian] signed the contract with Netflix on our side. It was in their inbox and they’re like ‘yeah we’re signing it.’ I’m pissed.”
As soon as Alvarez announced he was inking a multi-fight deal with Riyadh Season, Paul went nuclear in a viral video message aimed at the boxer while accusing him of negotiating in bad faith for a matchup against him.
Since that fight fell apart, Paul hasn’t really addressed what’s coming next for him, although he did seem to drown his tears with some retail therapy after purchasing his own private plane just recently.
As far as who he’s actually going to face in the ring with Canelo no longer available, Paul seemingly hasn’t explored many options but don’t expect him to revisit his influencer boxing days again.
While discussing his future, Logan told his brother that it might finally be time for him to take on fellow YouTube celebrity KSI, who he actually partners with on Prime Energy drinks.
Jake immediately shot down that idea while explaining why he’s not fighting KSI or any other influencer in his bout.
“I want a real boxer,” Paul said. “That’s why I wanted the deadliest boxer.”
KSI actually already has his own fight lined up against Dillon Danis in March but it seems unlikely that a win is going to earn him any attention from Paul despite their shared disdain for each other.
Paul hasn’t fought since this past November when he scored a unanimous decision win over Mike Tyson in an event that drew over 100 million viewers on Netflix.
